https://www.romaroomscolosseum.com/blogs/boom-community/dui-heads-to-nepal-with-forget-me-not 2023-04-14T15:28:51+10:00 2023-04-14T15:49:16+10:00 Dui heads to Nepal with Forget Me Not Brea Sheather Over the last month, our very own queen of colour Dui has been on the trip of a lifetime to Kathmandu, Nepal with our charity partner Forget Me Not. This is a charity very close to our hearts, with the sales of our colourful Charity Bags donated directly to Forget Me Not to support the work they do in Nepal, India, and Uganda.

As a passionate supporter of Forget Me Not, Dui had the opportunity to travel to Nepal to meet with the team on the ground and spend time in the local community. Whilst there, she had the privilege of connecting with an incredible group of young women who’ve been nurtured through Forget Me Not initiatives. Dui was humbled as these ladies shared their lived experiences with her. On the back of International Women's Day, we’d like to share some of these stories with you as well.

Since being reconnected to family with the help of the Forget Me Not team, immersed in culture and surrounded by love, Dui met many inspirational women who had overcome adversity to begin their own careers. Despite challenging experiences early on in life, the women Dui met are now budding lawyers, social workers, teachers, artists, hoteliers and accountants, with many currently studying at a tertiary level. Along with the Forget Me Not team, they are committed to helping strengthen understanding of the issue of orphanage trafficking in rural, remote and regional communities.

“I’ve formed such a strong family bond between all of the girls and it’s been wonderful to keep in contact with them most days since our trip. We are one big family and I feel very honoured to be one of the aunties.” - Dui

We’re very proud to see these ladies shine so bright. Keep shining superwomen.

The work of Forget Me Not was integral to changing the lives of these women. Forget Me Not works with the Nepal Government to provide a lifeline of hope for children trafficked into orphanages and children’s homes to give them a safe house and reconnect them with their families. Forget Me Not support the children and their families through education, counselling and up-skilling of family members.

More than 80% of children in Nepal institutions are not orphans. Global research shows they are taken from their families, largely on the promise of an education at boarding school in lieu of the family’s life savings. This is a form of modern-day slavery as traffickers change a child’s identity and sell them to an orphanage or home where they are used to generate funds.

For more information on Forget Me Not and their incredible work changing lives in Nepal, India and Uganda, visit fmn.org.au. They are always looking for help to raise awareness about the ‘orphan trade’, and raise funds required to rescue children from orphanages so they can return to their homes and families.

We have just dropped the first release of our Summer 2023 collection, Flower Power, so it’s time to take a peek at what has inspired the vibrant colours, retro touches and vacay vibes of the collection.

A Flower Power journey of kaleidoscopic colour awaits you this summer as you board the soul train. Sea spray and sunshine greet you at your first stop, Costa del Peregian, where the brilliant sapphire of the ocean and the lush sage of the pandanus trees come alive as the backdrop for crisp white florals. As dawn approaches a carnival of vermillion red, flamingo pink, tangerine and amber flowers bloom to welcome the rising sun as it casts deep ochre, plum and coral reflections over the water. Heading inland, the train departs, meandering through the enchanting landscapes that keep Australia Dreaming. Fields of mauve and mustard wild flowers pass you by as an aquamarine sky stretches overhead to meet moss green hills, dotted with bursts of blush pink, pomegranate and apricot blossoms. The train journeys through the deep charcoal night and you awake to a psychedelic dream of rainbow zigzags, daisies, cool bananas, and the fresh coconut of a Pina Colada. Like a cool breeze you blow through the tropics, Dancing on the Feeling as your heart beats to the sound of soulful retro rhythms and you groove through lush emerald palm fronds trailing a violet tiger that beckons you to follow. As the train departs its final stop, you meditate on the journey, treasuring the bubbling effervescence of life well-lived – a vibrant, loving, ever blooming Botanical Fizz.

This summer is alllll about the good vibes.
It brings us so much joy to be launching the Flower Power collection with some of our new, signature block prints. These pieces, and the collection as a whole, is made to give you that fresh summer feeling with a Boom take on dopamine dressing.

Vacay vibes abound with the collection taking style cues from an era where flower power florals were met with bold geos and graphic prints. It’s a nostalgic celebration that continues the love affair with all things India through the use of traditional print and construction techniques.

In this collection, you will find vibrant block print pieces, retro and feminine florals, funky tees, soft checks and geometric designs in fun and flattering shapes and luxe summer fabrications. And of course, our favourite thing of all for this season (and every season)… COLOUR!

So, stay tuned…. We hope you fall in love with Flower Power as much as we have. Good vibes only, always. Xx

About the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS)

SCARS has been saving animals on the Sunshine Coast since 1979. They provide temporary refuge and find new homes for abandoned, abused, stray and unwanted cats and dogs. The Refuge is an independent, non-profit, charitable organisation with a regulated non-euthanasia policy. They also run education programmes for the community on responsible animal ownership.

In order to tell our beautiful Boom community more about SCARS, we sat down with Penny Brischke, the President of SCARS, to get to know more about what they do and how your donation will help save the lives of the vulnerable animals in their care.

Watch the video below or read on to hear from Penny.

Could you please tell the Boom community a little bit about yourself, SCARS and the dogs that you help to find homes?

 • I am Penny and the President of SCARS. I have volunteered at SCARS since Feb 2006, so this is my 16th year. I am a nurse by trade and spend my time between volunteering at SCARS and working as a nurse. We rescue and rehome about 1,000 cats and dogs every year. We were established on the Sunny Coast in 1979 so have been operating for 43 years this year. As a non-government funded charity, we rely on the support of our community for donations, linen, food etc. Most of our dogs come from the local pound, where if we didn’t step in and rescue them, they may not get a second chance. We also take in dogs from private surrenders. A lot of these over the last two years have been related to the rental crisis, with many families being forced to surrender much-loved pets because they simply can't find pet-friendly accommodation. Such a sad situation.

What can people do to help the dogs of SCARS?

 • There are so many ways people can help our dogs (and cats) at SCARS. Volunteering to help walk, clean, feed etc. Ideally, this is on a regular basis. We are always looking for physically fit people who can walk big breed dogs. Going through your linen cupboards for towels, blankets etc, grabbing a few tins of food or bags of dry food and popping them in our food donations bins around the coast, adopting not shopping, spreading the word about adopting from SCARS, doing their own fundraisers like the team at Boom Shankar is doing! Donating balls, toys, beds and other goodies that our pooches can use. Share our social media posts about our furkids looking for homes.

What can people do to make sure they are a good Dog Mum or Dad?

 • Research the breed of dog that will suit your lifestyle, home, family. Make sure you know what a dog needs as the basics for care. Please make sure you use preventative treatments to stop your dog getting heartworm, ticks, worms and fleas. Make sure you include your pooch as part of the family, outings and general time at home. Train your pooch if you adopt a puppy! Helps make them a well rounded adult dog. Provide enough physical and mental activity for your pooch. Bring them inside for family time, especially in bad / cold / hot weather. Make sure you have good quality leads when walking and appropriate car restraints when they are travelling in your car. Always call us for advice if the dog you adopt is doing something you need a hand with. Love and care for your dog all of its life, from puppy phase to when they are old and slow. That’s when they need you the most.

How will the money raised by this campaign help the animals of SCARS?

 • $25 will microchip a cat or dog
 • $50 will feed 8 cats for a week
 • $100 will vaccinate 4 dogs
 • $200 will de-sex a cat or dog

It costs the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge Society (SCARS) over $2,000 per year to rehome and care for each dog and cat that comes in their door. This amount covers food, desexing, annual vaccination, worming and heart guard and incidental vet costs – all the basics – however the price of love and comfort that comes for these animals finding a forever home is priceless.

SCARS rehomes between 800 – 1000 cats and dogs each year. The average time a dog spends at the refuge waiting for a forever home is 4 months. Research from around the world suggests that long periods of time spent in shelters is detrimental to the well-being of cats and dogs, and it is for this reason we work tirelessly with the help of volunteers from the community to find new forever homes for our cats and dogs within one month of them arriving.

We would love for our Boom community to come together and support SCARS as they do such amazing work!

Shop the Dog Mum Jumper or make a donation directly to SCARS here.

https://www.romaroomscolosseum.com/blogs/boom-community/road-tripping-with-dui 2022-03-14T15:24:54+10:00 2022-03-14T15:24:54+10:00 Roadtrip to Winton with Dui Portia Vann “There’s nothing I enjoy more than road trips out west. Those big open outback roads, where the landscapes change and the colours just pop! It’s Australia at its best!” - Dui

Last year while Dui was creating our romaroomscolosseum Winter 2022 collection, Heartland, she took a little break and a very long drive (1,384km to be exact) and headed out to the Winton Film Festival.

“It’s the beautiful sunrises and sunsets of the outback, with those deep and powerful yellow, orange and red tones that I love. The vivid colours of the day with the bright blues and the lush greens, both contrasted against the harsh red earth. All these elements spark my creativity and explode my mind with colour palettes and patterns. My mind is like a starry night in the outback, sparkling with ideas.”

So, let’s pack our bags and get the camper van ready (virtually) and let’s go on a trip down memory lane with Dui, as she heads off from the Sunshine Coast and takes a long drive out west… finding treasures and meeting locals along the way.

First stop on the journey was Goomeri, 146km west of the Sunshine Coast, and home to one of the best bakeries in the world Dui reckons. Goomeri, which is situated in Wakka Wakka country, has a population of 664 people* and is best known for its annual Pumpkin Festival, which attracts up to 14,000 visitors each year, the highlight being the “Great Australian Pumpkin Roll” down Policeman’s Hill. Goomeri is also well known for its local gourmet produce including olives and cheeses, and there’s even a few wineries worth checking out. No wonder Dui loves the place so much!

After enjoying a delicious gourmet pie and having a quick stretch of the legs, Dui set back off on the road heading towards Winton. The first night of the trip was spent at a little town called Miles, formerly known as Dogwood Crossing, 384km west of the Sunshine Coast and with a population of 1,746 people*. Miles is known for having one of the best historical villages in Australia which is often used as a film set, in addition to its normal operations as a museum. Dui also says she had the best roast dinner of her life in Miles at a pub called, The Australian. We better not tell her mother she said that!

The following day she set back out on the big open road and headed to her next stop, Roma, 525km west of the Sunshine Coast, with a population of 6,848 people* and originally home of the Mandandanji nation. Roma is known for it’s bottle trees, and most importantly, its biggest bottle tree which has a girth of 9.62 metres, a height of 15 metres and a crown of 23 metres. Dui’s main attraction in Roma was stumbling upon ‘Ace Drapers’ a haberdashery store with EVERYTHING. Established in 1977, which you could probably find some stock from back then buried under the piles of fabric, Ace Drapers is stocked to the brim with everything from fabrics, curtains, haberdashery, uniforms, kitchenware and more. If you’re looking for it, they’ve probably got it! And the best part is, no matter how jam packed it is with stock, the owner knows exactly where to find everything. So as you could imagine, this place was heaven for Dui!!

After Roma, Dui carried on her road trip via Murgon, Augathella (where Dui’s uncle used to have a station) up to Tambo, Blackall, then to Barcaldine where she made her next pitstop. Birthplace of the Australian Labor Party, Barcaldine is 1,096km northwest of the Sunshine Coast, has a population of 1,422 people* and is the traditional land of the Iningai. Alongside its Labour Party ties, Barcaldine is known for the heritage-listed Tree of Knowledge, which is a 200 year old ghost gum where strikers used to meet and stand outside the railway station. In 2006, persons unknown poisoned the tree with herbicide, which unfortunately led to its demise. In October 1992 the Tree of Knowledge was added to the QLD Heritage Register and what’s left of it is now protected with an enclosure.

After gaining a little more knowledge in Barcaldine 🌳, Dui headed for the next port of call, Longreach, 1,203km northwest of the Sunshine Coast, with a population of 2,970 people* and the also part of the Iningai people land. Most of us know Longreach for being home to the Stockman's Hall of Fame and also as one of the founding centres for Qantas, with Winton being its birthplace. One of the airline's original hangars still remains in use at the Longreach Airport and is listed on the Australian National Heritage List.

So, after having a good old classic pie from the bakery she was ready for the long stretch of road taking her straight to Winton. No more stops, it was Winton here we come!!

When she arrived the town was bursting with people and energy!

Winton is a very barren town that’s 1,382km northwest of the Sunshine Coast, a population of 875 people* and with the traditional owners of the area being the Koa people.

Dui’s mission out here was not only for the Vision Splendid Film Festival of Winton, but also to check out the dinosaurs. Yes, the dinosaurs!

The Vision Splendid Film Festival is held annually at the Royal Theatre which is a beautiful outdoor cinema established in 1918 and one of the only few left in Australia that’s still operating. The array of films showcased are… splendid! 😉 But Dui's favourite by far was ‘I’m Wanita’, a documentary about a country music renegade, hell-bent on realising her childhood dream of stardom before its too late. And to top it off, Dui randomly got to meet Want at the local pub and she lived up to every bit of her personality.

The other highlight of Winton for Dui (as mentioned before) was checking out the Dinosaur Stampede National Monument where a herd of at least 150 small two-legged dinosaurs, including carnivorous coelurosaurs (about the size of chickens) and slightly larger plant-eating ornithopods, came to drink at the edge of a lake. Formed 95 million years ago, over 3,300 footprints of these long-extinct dinosaurs are scattered over the rock face, stark evidence of the terror they would have experienced as they fled the scene when a large theropod arrived. This snapshot of a few terrifying moments has been frozen in time, immortalising the event and making Winton home to the only known dinosaur stampede in the world. Who wouldn’t be impressed seeing that!!!

So, after a few more local pies, cold ales and interesting films, it was time for Dui to make the trip back home to the Sunshine Coast. But, she’s definitely returning again for this years Vision Splendid Film Festival, and who knows what inspires her on the next trip.

https://www.romaroomscolosseum.com/blogs/boom-community/introducing-our-winter-2022-collection-heartland 2022-03-08T11:57:27+10:00 2022-04-22T11:54:12+10:00 Heartland is Here Portia Vann We have just dropped the first release of our Winter 2022 collection, Heartland, so it’s time to take a peek behind the curtain at what inspired this collection.

With bold red dust at its heart and embraced by cool blue oceans, Australia will enchant you. In a town out west, the patter of rain drums on corrugated iron as the dry breaks and dusty plains explode into a fleeting rainbow bloom of wildflowers. On the west coast, surfers greet the day by dancing with dolphins, riding the crystal clear swells in their morning meditation. In the city, the sun glitters on blue harbours and the streets hum with creativity, lively debate and freshly roasted coffee. From the salt of the beach to the red dust of the outback, these epic landscapes breathe life into the people, inspiring deep connection, smiles from strangers, the art of a good yarn, and laughter that spreads like wildfire. We celebrate this magical land with a swathe of desert blooms in mauve, dusky plum, powder blue, and black colliding with bold urban checks, inky leopard prints, strong navy stripes and playful jewel-toned geometric circles. These are mixed with a range of popping knits reflecting the soft purples of a beach sunset, the acid-bright flowers of the tropics, the rainbow striped sky after fresh rain, and a beaming “Whatsup?” from a new-found friend. Australia captivates your mind, body, heart and soul, and here we celebrate all the natural wonders, culture, community and connection that make it so enchanting.

To put it simply, this collection is inspired by the country we call home, and exploring everything this big, beautiful place has to offer.

“There’s nothing I enjoy more than hitting those big open central Australian roads and just driving. Road trips are the best.” - Dui

Dui’s inspiration for the latest romaroomscolosseum collection was drawn from her recent trip out to Winton, the dinosaur capital of Australia, when she went to attend the annual Winton Film Festival.

“It’s all about the beautiful sunrises of yellow, orange and red, that are so a deep and powerful, and an amazing way to start the day. As the sun comes up the outback transforms with vivid colours of the bright blue sky and the lush green fauna, contrasted against the harsh red earth. As the day begins to set, the colours change again, between the deep red and golden tones, similar to sunrise, and slowly drift into the beautiful soft violets and blues that welcome the night sky. Then come the stars, which in the outback, are next level amazing!”

“When I see these spectacular sights with all those special colours, my mind goes BOOM and the creativity starts to flow. And to know it’s just there, in our own backyard.”

It brings us so much joy to be launching this collection with our new, signature Boom denim. These pieces, and the collection as a whole, puts a vintage 70s spin on a classic outback look, taking style cues from an era where country casual was met by urban bold, graphic prints. It’s a nostalgic celebration that continues the love affair with all things India through the use of traditional print and construction techniques.

In this collection you can expect to see beautiful block print pieces, feminine florals, funky jumpsuits, a very special new edition to our classic guru family, fun checkered fabrics, geometric designs, winter wardrobe staples, and of course, our favourite thing of all for this season… KNITS!

We’ll also be taking you on a road trip with Dui from the Sunshine Coast out to Winton, and we’ll discover some of her favourite places and meet some of the friendly people she fell in love with on the way. We even get to take a little peek at some of her personal photos (but not THAT type of personal, haha).

So, stay tuned…. And we hope you fall in love with Heartland as much as we have. Xx

Blending two of Dui’s favourite things, the 1970s and the country, she’s designed four staple denim pieces for your autumn/winter wardrobe, that will keep giving, year after year and even throughout different seasons.

Meet our new Brando Denim range

Made from 90% lyocell and 10% cotton this washed denim is soft, comfy and will make you feel so damn good, you’ll be grooving all day and night long. But before we go into the technical side of our Boom denim, let’s meet our four new friends… from the Brando family, which hasn’t been named after Marlon Brando!

The romaroomscolosseum Brando Shirt is a luxurious and classic denim shirt. Featuring two pockets, metal buttons, a collar, soft balloon sleeves with a wrist cuff, and a pleat at the back for a relaxed fit.. The lyocell and cotton blend denim is suuuper soft and moulds to your body for a comfy and flattering fit.

The romaroomscolosseum Brando Pant is a dreamy 70s wide leg, high waisted jean, designed to sit comfortably across the hips and then flow down into a flare. The waistband has been made with a little extra room, so you can tuck in a shirt, knit and just feel that little bit more comfortable, while also looking very flattering. They’re the perfect length for wearing a slightly higher shoe, if wanted, to make those legs longer!

The romaroomscolosseum Brando Jumpsuit is a dreamy 70s take on denim workwear. It’s a full length, wide leg, short-sleeved boiler suit, with safari pocket detailing, and a drawstring waist tie that has an elasticated section at the back. Plus it has pockets on the chest, hips and at the back! This jumpsuit is a trans-seasonal piece, and with the flared leg that drops from the hip, it’s an extremely flattering fit.

The romaroomscolosseum Brando Dress is an extremely versatile denim winter dress. With metal buttons down the full front of the dress, it can be worn as a dress or open and layered as a jacket. With both hip and chest pockets, a drawstring waist tie and elasticated section at back waist, and in a flattering A-line shape for a more relaxed fit.

So, what is Lyocell?

Well, let’s have a little look into this fabulous fabric….

Firstly, Lyocell is a very versatile product that can be found in bed linens, towels, clothing, underwear and even medical dressing. Aside from its multiple uses, Lyocell is highly coveted because it's 100% biodegradable and compostable, unless it’s been blended with other synthetic fibres. Lyocell products will only take a couple of months to decompose, contrary to other plastic-based items that could take up to 100 years to biodegrade.

In 1982, Lyocell was originally trademarked as Tencel. The making of Lyocell starts with harvesting wood, which often comes from fast growing eucalyptus trees, like the lyocell we use at romaroomscolosseum, but oak, bamboo and birch trees can also be used. This wood is then broken down into tiny pieces and chemicals are added to dissolve it into a wood pulp. The result is a liquid and sticky raw cellulose, which is heated and broken into small pieces one more time using a solvent called amine oxide. After being filtered, the cellulose goes through a spinning process that turns it into bright, long and thin fibres. These fibres are washed, dried and lubricated, until they're ready to be spun into a yarn and woven into the final Lyocell fabric.

What makes Lyocell environmentally-friendly?

To start, the lyocell fibre production process is called a “closed loop” system, which is a manufacturing process that doesn't create harmful by-products. The dissolvent chemicals involved in its creation are non-toxic and can be reused so they’re not released into the environment once the process is finished. Plus, amine oxide, which is one of the solvents involved in the Lyocell fibre production process, isn't harmful and is totally recyclable. On top of that, Lyocell's entire production process is quite short and simple compared to other manmade fibres, which means less water and less energy are required.

Another great fact, is that the most common source of lyocell is eucalyptus trees (like we use!) and that ticks all the right boxes. Eucalyptus trees can grow almost anywhere and even in lands that are no longer fit for planting food. They grow very quickly and don't require any irrigation or pesticides, like most other fabric fibre sources do.

It's time to get grooving in our Brando Denim collection!

Last week our romaroomscolosseum queen Dui caught up with our three favourite ladies, Mick, Jan and Jill, for a lovely morning tea… and of course, to play dress ups with Boom!

Let’s see what the ladies favourite choices were… Scroll down to shop their looks.

(Left to right: Jan, Dui, Jill, Mick)

For morning tea, Jan wears the Peela Block Print Amari Shirt Dress, which is made using our sunny Peela cotton, from our traditional Indian wooden block range. The Boom shirt dress is a must have for summer! With the versatility to be worn as an oversized (yet stylish) dress with its matching slip underneath, thrown straight over swimmers for a relaxed resort look, or open and flowing over pants, dresses, shorts, whatever your heart desires. Plus it’s super soft being 100% rayon!!

Our fabulous Dui has gone for a beautiful soft flowing look with the Ahana Lily Embroided Dress, and the Maahee Maahee Shirt that she’s styled over top. The fabric of the Ahana Dress has a beautiful drape, intricate embroidery detail on the bodice and hem, and slits on either side, which make this dress a truly special piece. Teamed with the classic, cool and carefree Maahee Maahee Shirt, with the beautiful hand embroidery and sweet shell buttons, this look is perfect for various summer soirees.

Jill is looking stunning with that rich blue and cool white combo, as she’s teamed the comfy Neela Guru Jumpsuit, with the beautiful Ahana Embroided Kimono. If you love our bestselling Guru pants then you will love our cool jumpsuit version of them. They’re loose, light, super comfortable and can be tied up with the matching fabric belt, or not. The Ahana Kimono is crafted with gorgeous stubbed textured cotton, lovely sweet embroidery detail and ornamental edges, which can dress up you summer casuals.

Mick, and those super fun green glasses of hers, looks great in the ornately embroidered Ahana Lily Embroided Shirt and our Orissa Desi Pants that she’s styled together. The textured woven cotton fabric and sweet embroidered detail of the Ahana Shirt bring a playfulness to this classic summer style top. Contrasted with the flowing wide-leg and luxurious drape of the Orissa pants, with its print of rich maroon and indigo colourings that are beautifully complimented by the lightness of the pastel pinks, blues and yellows, it’s a fun little mix perfect for summer days and nights.

Mick wears the classic, cool and carefree, Maahee Maahee Shirt, made in 100% cotton and featuring beautiful hand embroidered detail, she has teamed it with the Neela Lurex Skirt that shimmers hints of gold lurex and flows gorgeously with its elegant tiers.

Once again Jill is looking fantastic in this blue and white combo! The comfy Neela Guru Jumpsuit, teamed with the beautiful Ahana Embroided Kimono.

That Pondicherry fun! Here Jan wears the Pondicherry Shirt (it’s such a statement!) with our classic Navy Guru Pants, and we’re loving the contrast which makes the shirt POP. This light and breezy Pondicherry Shirt is made with luxurious linen in our custom-designed Pondicherry Print - so fun! It looks fabulous over some plain Guru pants (like Jan has done), pants, skirts, or open over a dress or singlet for a different look. And the Guru Pants? Well, we don’t have to say much other than being the most comfortable and flattering pants, they’re a wardrobe staple, and if you’ve never tried them, we suggest you do!

(Left to right: Jill, Mick, Jan)

Jan and Jill might be sisters but we rarely see them dress the same, so you can tell this dress is a winner for summer! The Orissa Collared Dress fits just like a classic shirt-dress, only with a bit more oomph! Its relaxed fit, knee-length and lightweight fabric makes it the perfect coverup after a beach day or smart casual brunch look. The Orissa print has rich maroon and indigo colourings that are beautifully complimented by the lightness of the pastel pinks, blues and yellows, and printed on a luxurious rayon fabric. This dress is a summer staple.

Oh Micky you’re so fine, you’re so fine… that we think you look great in the Orissa Tiered Dress with the Ahana Embroided Kimono over the top!! We’re in love with this maxi and all it’s romance with those indigo hues of the Orissa print. It’s soft flowing fabric drapes beautifully and the shirred back panel makes it the perfect fit for all bodies. The rich maroon and indigo colourings are beautifully complemented by the lightness of the pastel pinks, blues and yellows. We love that Micky has styled it with the Ahana Kimono in that gorgeous stubbed textured cotton and the delicate sweet embroidery detail and ornamental edges. It’s an outfit for an angel!

(Left to right: Jan, Jill, Mick)

Jan looks fabulous in the white, classic and carefree Maahee Maahee Dress! The hand-embroidered detail, tassels and balloon sleeves bring some playfulness to this classic white summer dress. Made with a lovely soft flowy cotton material and sweet little shell buttons, the Maahee Dress is just what you need in your summer wardrobe.

What a fun combo Jill has picked for this look. Our classic Boom style Red Sago Stripe Tee worn with the fun and colourful Pondicherry Pants, that are made with a luxurious linen blend fabric, and stylishly cut with a high waist and matching tie belt, that flow down to beautiful, flattering wide legs. With our colourful and abstract Pondicherry print, these pants are sure to be head turners.

I love this look! Here Mick has styled our fun Pondicherry Jumpsuit with the Mint Mudra Shirt Dress. The jumpsuit is crafted with lightweight linen material that’s shaped with an elasticated back panel, for ultimate comfort. With pleats at the waist and wide legs, it accentuates curves and is customisable to your body with three adjustable button fastenings that sit at the back of the shoulder. Our Mint Mudra Shirt Dress is so versatile and can be worn as an oversized (yet stylish) dress paired with sandals or sneakers, or perfect straight over your swimmers, or like Mick has done, throw it over like a jacket. It’s super soft too being 100% rayon.

romaroomscolosseum partnered with Classic Malibu to create our magnificent "log" board, which was hand-crafted by owner, Peter and his team in Noosa. Like romaroomscolosseum, Classic Malibu has been a household name on the Sunshine coast for over 30 years. When Peter and Janet launched the Classic Malibu label they were the only manufacturers and retailers of surfboards in the Noosa region.

Now, two and a half decades on, the name of Classic Malibu is recognised around the world as a purveyor of expertly crafted traditional and progressive longboards. With some fifty years of shaping experience under his sanding belt, founder and head shaper Peter White brings every year of that knowledge and talent into each and every board he creates, demanding the same attention to detail and high level of perfection of his staff. Noosa is the home of the Gubbi Gubbi people, whose land stretches approximately 100km south and 150km north of Noosa. It is important that we always pay our respects to the traditional owners of this land – past, present and future – and the rich history they have.

Noosa is also known for its beautiful beaches, endless sunshine, bright blue skies, perfect rolling waves, untouched national parks, and of course, the hometown of romaroomscolosseum. All of us feel incredibly blessed to live in such a picturesque tropical paradise and thank our lucky stars. Living here also gives you a deep respect of the ocean, from the soul nourishment that salt water provides, to the magnificent sea animals we get to experience and observe most days when we’re by the coast.

Surfers have an even deeper relationship with the ocean, that I think it would be reminiscent of the give and take we share with life. They share a connection to the waves and respect the power they hold, and when moments come of sharing rides with our aquatic mammal friends, I couldn’t imagine the overwhelming feeling one would have.

We thought it would be fun to have a chat with a local surfer and face of our surfboard giveaway, whose been enjoying riding the Noosa waves since she was 6 years old, and is now an international professional longboard competitor. Meet Kirra Molnar…

Can you please tell the Boom Community a little about yourself?

Hello, my name is Kirra. I’m originally from South Australia and my family moved to Noosa when I was about 2 years old, so I grew up surfing the points of Noosa and the beaches. I've always loved dabbling in a range of activities from surfing, tennis, golf and playing piano. When I graduated high school I studied a Bachelor in Business & Bachelor in Sport & Exercise Science at University of the Sunshine Coast, from there I found what I loved and just fell into the work that I do now.
I run my own surf coaching and fitness business and contract work to a number of other companies. I know a lot about surfboard design after working at Classic Malibu for a number of years and now have a sponsorship with them. In the past few years I have competed on the WSL World Longboard Tour all round the world.

At what age did you start surfing?

I started surfing at the age of 6 here in Noosa.

Did you come from a surfing family, or did someone inspire you?

My dad was always a keen surfer and he used to push me onto waves on my little blue Elnino foamie. I still remember the moment, a couple years into surfing, that it all clicked and I'd caught the bug. My mum then began surfing more with us too and now she loves to longboard.

What feeling do you get when being in the water?

It's a feeling of excitement.... When I see a good set coming it’s as if I can feel the joy it will bring before even catching the wave. The ocean also is a place to clear my head and find some focus, away from my calendar and the rest of the business that life creates.

Who is your most favorite surfer?

Wow that’s a hard question, as there are so many good surfers and I love a lot of different styles. I would have to say that it is more about who that surfer is as a person and not just their ability in the water.

Oh man, I can't pick just one, probably my biggest influences growing up were David Rastovich and Layne Beachley. But I also compete against my friends who are amazing surfers and inspire me every day.

Where is the best surf spot you’ve been to?

My family moved to Fiji for a couple of years when I was a kid and I got to surf Cloud Break and Wilks Passage a lot. Uncrowded perfect waves!

Any memorable moments whilst surfing you’d like to share?

Some of my most memorable moments have been surfing overseas in new and challenging places. Last year I did the Longboard Championship tour, and whilst competing in Taiwan in the final event, I surfed out at this perfect left hand point/reef break with only 3 other people. It was bigger and quite windy, but so awesome!

What advice would you give someone wanting to learn to surf?

Don't wait, if you're keen to give it a go start NOW. You don't know what you're missing out on, but be warned it might take over you life... surfing is pretty addictive. If you're just starting out book a lesson and learn the right technique first, it’s hard to change bad habits and easier to progress quickly with a good coach.

And finally, what does it mean to you to live a big beautiful life?

To me this means living in the present moment and making decisions that allow me to enjoy what I do every day.

Sounds like a dream board?
You would be right, here's how to make it yours!

]]>

It's that time of year again when India lights up, ready to celebrate the most important holiday of the year, Diwali.

This famous festival is one of the major religious festivals in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism, and lasts for five days, from the 13th day of the dark half of the lunar month, Ashvina, to the second day of the light half of the lunar month, Karttika.

Diwali is named after the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolise the inner light that protects them from spiritual darkness. The name is derived from the Sanskrit term dipavali, meaning “row of lights.”

Throughout the festival, small earthenware lamps filled with an oil called diyas, are lit and placed in rows along the parapets of temples and houses plus set afloat on rivers and streams. Homes are decorated, and floors inside and out are covered with rangoli, which is an art where elaborate patterns are created using materials such as powdered limestone, red ochre, dry rice flour, coloured sand, quartz powder, flower petals, and coloured rocks, coloured rice, sand, or flower petals. The doors and windows of houses are kept open in the hope that Lakshmi will find her way inside and bless the residents with wealth and success.

DIWALI IS CELEBRATED OVER FIVE DAYS.

The first day is known as Dhanteras. People clean their homes and shop for gold or kitchen utensils to help bring good fortune. Lakshmi is the focus of worship on this day.

The second day is called Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali. People decorate their homes with clay lamps and create rangoli design patterns on the floor. This day commemorates Krishna’s destruction of Narakasura, and prayers are also offered for the souls of ancestors.

The third day is known as Lakshmi Puja, and it’s the main day of the Diwali festival. On this day families gather together for Lakshmi puja, a prayer to Goddess Lakshmi, to ensure their prosperity. They light diyas, candles, visit temples, have mouth-watering feasts and firework festivities.

The fourth day is called Goverdhan Puja, Balipratipada, or Annakut. This is the first day of Karttika, and the start of the new year in the Vikrama (Hindu) calendar when friends and relatives visit with gifts and best wishes for the season. It commemorates Krishna’s defeat of Indra, the king of the gods. Merchants perform religious ceremonies and open new account books.

The fifth day, called Bhai Dooj, Bhai Tika, or Bhai Bij, and celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. On that day sisters pray for the success and well-being of their brothers, and the brothers visit their married sisters, who welcome them with love and a lavish meal.

CELEBRATIONS OF DIWALI DIFFER DEPENDING ON REGION AND TRADITION

Over the centuries, Diwali has become a national festival that's also enjoyed by non-Hindu communities.

The Hindus most widespread custom is the lighting of diyas on the night of the new moon to invite the presence of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.

In northern India, they celebrate the story of King Rama's return to Ayodhya after he defeated Ravana, the 10-headed king of the demons, by lighting rows of clay lamps.

In Bengal the goddess Kali is worshipped.

Southern India celebrates it as the day that Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura. Some celebrate Diwali as a commemoration of the marriage of Lakshmi and Vishnu, while others acknowledge it as the birthday of Lakshmi.

In western India the festival marks the day that Lord Vishnu, the Preserver (one of the main gods of the Hindu trinity) sent the demon King Bali to rule the nether world.

In Jainism, Diwali marks the nirvana, or spiritual awakening, of Lord Mahavira on October 15, 527 B.C. The lighting of the lamps celebrates the light of Mahavira’s holy knowledge.

In Sikhism, it honours the day that Guru Hargobind, the Sixth Sikh Guru, was freed from captivity in Gwalior. Residents of Amritsar lit lamps throughout the city to celebrate the occasion.

Some Buddhists in India celebrate Diwali as well as a commemoration of the day when Emperor Ashoka converted to Buddhism in the 3rd century BCE.

https://www.romaroomscolosseum.com/blogs/boom-community/we-re-living-in-the-seventies-introducing-our-vintej-floral-print 2021-11-02T10:41:07+10:00 2022-02-21T11:55:47+10:00 We're living in the seventies! Introducing our Vintej Floral Print. Liv Mills

Take a trip with us down memory lane as we launch our Vintej summer collection. Inspired by 1970s wallpaper, our Boom designers have created a rayon fabric of gorgeous vintage florals in beautiful earthy orange and brown tones, that will transport you into the world of sunken lounge rooms, fabulous kitsch wallpapers, and dry martinis… shaken, not stirred.

The 1970s were characterised by the Flower Power era, which originally began in America in the late 1960s. This “hippie” counterculture grew to include hundreds of thousands of young Americans across the country, in rejection of America’s involvement in the Vietnam War. But even when the hippie movement was slowly coming to an end in the US, across Europe and around the world, the sense of rebellion amongst young people continued. It was a counterculture that rejected current political and sociological views, and their distinctive brand of “hippie” rebellion - long hair and beards, colourful style, and eco-conscious lifestyle—would leave a lasting impact on the world in the decades to come.

Being the Flower Power era, floral patterns made a huge presence in clothing and also wallpaper designs. They remained colourful, whilst patterns became large-scale, often geometric, and daring. Rich and earthy colours like orange, green and brown are the ones symbolic of the 1970s, and hence the tones were chosen for our Vintej collection which is available for pre-order now!

There is without a doubt orange is the cult colour for the Flower Power era and 1970s design. Orange symbolises energy, power, activity, and it stimulates the body and mind. The colour is associated with comfort and warmth, and it dispels negativity and signals a departure from the mundane. The brighter, the better, but lighter and darker nuances were also popular options in the 1970s.

Green is the colour of hope therefore it characterises the hippie era with all its aspirations, yearnings and fears. The colour stands for nature and spirituality, and the awareness of one's inner self and the subconscious. The 1970s also saw the beginnings of the environmental protection movement, and many "green" parties and organisations were founded during those years.

Brown is often seen as solid, much like the earth, and it's a colour often associated with resilience, dependability, security, and safety. Its earthy hues establish a connection to nature and create an energy of warmth and cosiness. Mahogany and teak were the fashionable types of wood used in furniture in the 1970s, and these colours are reflected in fashion and wallpaper designs of the time.

So, let’s take a step inside our new Vintej collection…

First off is my favourite, the gorgeous Vintej Dress. This garment is made from a beautiful soft rayon with a sexy deep V neckline and flowing skirt. This dress is elegant and summery, so will see you through any occasion, whether it be a wedding, ladies long lunch, or casual picnic with friends, as you can style it with strappy tan sandals, little ankle boots, sneakers, or whatever your heart desires. There’s a concealed hook and eye on the neckline which means you can adjust the depth to suit your look. Most of all, the softness of the rayon and the glorious retro-inspired print, make this dress a winner for summer, and for many summers to come.

Our new Vintej Skirt is a lovely gored styled skirt featuring subtle panelling to form a gentle A-line shape, and a matching fabric belt to complete the look. You can style this skirt with simple feminine tops, the matching Vintej Singlet, or shake it up with a little mix and match style. From the office to the cafe, you'll never be out of place in the Vintej Skirt.

The wide-leg Haathee Pants may just become your new summer staple. These beautiful soft flowing pants are perfect for keeping cool and will add some fun to your wardrobe whether you're at the beach, out with friends, or just relaxing at home. With those lovely soft earthy vintage tones, you could style these pants with a selection of different tops, making them versatile for all sorts of occasions. The Haathee Pants are a full-length, wide-leg with a shirred pack panel on the waistband and best of all… they have pockets!!

And lastly, the Vintej Singlet. Keep cool all summer with this lightweight and flowy singlet which features sweet little shell button detail down the front. Pair the Vintage Singlet with denim shorts for a casual look or play matchy-matchy with either the Vintej Skirt or Vintej Pants. You’ll get endless wear out of this simple, sweet, soft rayon singlet, in our glorious retro-inspired Vintej print.

JUST A FEW OF DUI’S FAVOURITE THINGS…

Picking your favourite pieces of clothing is pretty much an impossible task to do when you have so much choice. Our summer collection this year is bursting with fun, colourful options that are perfect for picnics on the beach with friends, fancy long lunches with the girls or just “looking fab” every day. We asked our amazing founder and designer Dui what’s grabbed her attention so far for summer… stay tuned as I’m sure there’ll be more to come.

The beautiful crinkled cotton Ahana Dress in Sunset, with its stunning embroidery, is one of Dui’s favourites so far in our current summer collection. It’s an easy wearing, soft, flowing cotton dress, with a beautiful drape. To get the most out of the fabric, Dui usually twists it after it’s washed to get the crinkles going again. “The more crinkles the better!”, she says. The Ahana Dress is fully lined so you don’t have to worry about it being see-through, and it can be worn dressed up, or just straight over your swimmers on a summers day. Dui loves styling it with the Cisco Denim Jacket with ‘Groove is in the Heart’ embroidered on the back.

This fun little combo is a Dui winner! The classic styled Tribeca Pants in Kapade Brown Check are a funky addition to your summer wardrobe. They’re a perfect lightweight and breathable cotton fabric, with texture and movement, pleats in the front, an elasticised back waistband and POCKETS! Dui loves wearing them with her favourite Bengal Boss Zion Tee as it has a print of an Indian prince riding a tiger on the front. This print is from a traditional miniature Indian painting from the Rajasthan area (where Dui lives part-time). The fabric is soft and woven, in an old burnt out cotton look, something Dui hasn’t seen for ages so thought it would be good for this season.

Who doesn’t love watercolours?! well, Dui definitely does!!

For Dui’s first look, she has styled the Boom Watercolour Kerala Singlet with our Mint Mudra Shirt & the Mittee Block Print Tribeca Pants. This combo is such a Dui look as she’s known for mixing prints and colours and creating super fun styles. Here she is wearing the Mint Mudra Shirt over the Boom Watercolour Singlet, with our BOOM written in Hindi on the front. This lovely, soft, flowing singlet can be worn in numerous occasions, from fun colourful outfits like this, with simple shorts on a hot summery day, or dressed up with pants or a skirt, as the colours and fabric are just divine. The Mint Mudra Shirt features an astrological motif and Devanagari script, plus our BOOM in Hindi on the back, which looks great over the top of the watercolour singlet. Being a 100% rayon the fabric is soft, light and perfect for summer. Dui has teamed the Tribeca Pants in our Mittee Block Print to finish off the whole look. Dui loves our traditional wooden block print fabrics as it is a traditional form of fabric design so something to be celebrated.

For Dui’s second watercolour combo, she’s gone for a smart yet sporty outfit with our matching Boom Watercolour Kerala Singlet and Boom Watercolour pants. Dui loves matching sets, and especially ones with romaroomscolosseum written in Hindi all the way up the leg line… plus a big Hindi BOOM on the singlet. Dui reckons this outfit would look great with funky sneakers, but here she’s gone for some colourful platform Teva’s, as summer on the coast usually calls for open shoes. Being shorter, Dui’s pulled the elasticised ankle bands of the pants up her legs to adjust the length, which makes them fall beautifully still without any hassle of having to alter. This outfit is fun, colourful, and very comfy.

For her third watercolour look, Dui has teamed the Boom Watercolour pants with our elegant Ahana Embroidered Singlet. This beautiful white cotton singlet is floaty and feminine, with sweet embroidered detail and textured woven fabric with ornamental edges that bring a lovely contrast to the playful colourful watercolour pants. You could dress this outfit up with colourful beads and big fun earrings. The options are endless!!!!

This jumpsuit is gorgeous! Created with textured woven fabric and ornamental edges, with sweet embroidered detail, make this jumpsuit a chic and classic look that can be dressed up for a daytime event, and stunning heading out to a fancy dinner. Dui has styled it first with the matching Ahana Embroidered Kimono which is made from the same fabric, and together they create a very sophisticated and elegant look, that’s feminine and floaty, and would be perfect for a wedding or any fancy event. For a different style altogether, Dui has paired the Ahana Jumpsuit with our Laal Shirt tied up over top to eventuate the waistline. The beautiful pinks of the Laal block print fabric against the soft white tone of our Ahana Jumpsuit make this a really gorgeous combo.

Stay tuned for more dress ups with Dui soon….

Whoever said dressing for work needs to be boring, especially when your work involves teaching children and inspiring their futures. Wouldn’t it be more fun if you could fill that work space with colour and joy? Imagine if you could uplift and inspire your students just by wearing something exciting and a little quirky everyday…

We caught up with a few local Eumundi Primary School teachers who love wearing romaroomscolosseum in the classroom, and they showed us their current favourite styles.

First up, is Brittany… Let’s get to know her a little before we play dress ups…

Could you please tell the BOOM community little about yourself?

Hi! I’m Brittany! I’m originally from Brissy. This is my 7th year of teaching, completing 2 years at a remote school in Karumba, and 5 wonderful years at Eumundi State School. I am currently a year 6 teacher!

What made you want to become a teacher?

I can’t really recall a definitive reason for being drawn to teaching, it is just always what I wanted to do. I was the kid that always said “I want to be a teacher when I grow up!” and I never wavered, completing my schooling, going straight to uni and then straight back into a classroom!

What’s the best thing about your job?

The best thing about my job - the kids! I get to hang out with 28 little buddies every day, and each year I get a whole new set of new pals! The relationships I build with my students are each unique and I treasure each and every one.

What kind of clothing do you like to wear in the classroom?

I’m all about comfort, but I also think it’s really important to present professionally and take pride in my appearance. So clothes that are comfortable to wear while also looking the part are my go to! I love the more girly stuff, like dresses and skirts in the classroom. I also choose carefully when it come the appropriateness of clothing. Being a tall girl, it can be hard to find items of an appropriate length! So that’s always something I consider. I also love colour!!

What do you like about romaroomscolosseum clothing?

The clothes from romaroomscolosseum are all items I’d have in my wardrobe for school! They are all so comfortable and had bright beautiful colours! I love that the styles are light and airy – perfect for staying comfortable all day in summer!

What is it about Boom styles that make them good for the classroom?

Lovely patterns and colours, incredibly comfortable, breathable materials, fantastic quality and above all, they simply look great!

For Brittany’s first outfit, she has chosen our lightweight Eva Tee in Mustard, which is crafted with a tencel/linen blend fabric, giving it a lovely textured woven feel that’s soft and in a relaxed fit. She’s teamed it with the Vintej Skirt in our beautiful flowing ‘vintej’ rayon fabric, that has a matching fabric belt. This outfit makes a great classroom style especially with all those lovely orange tones, which is the colour for joy, creativity, communication and positivity!

For her second outfit, Brittany has layered the fun Zion Tee over our Kerala Dress in Kaindee. This stunning candy stripe dress is made with a soft lightweight rayon fabric, and is our take on the classic slip style dress. The fun candy stripes of mint and marigold is sure to make you (and others) smile on a sunny summer day. Brittany matches it with our classic denim Cisco Jacket with fun rainbow ‘Groove is in the Heart’ embroidery. How could school children not love this colourful ensemble!

Now let’s meet Bonnie Baker….

Could you please tell the BOOM community little about yourself?

I have been a primary school teacher since 2001 - 20 years. During this period, I have taught all grades including preschool and was a Physical Education teacher for a couple of years. I have taught in the Torres Strait, North Brisbane areas and I am currently teaching year 3 on the Sunshine Coast.

What made you want to become a teacher?

Growing up, my mum was a Kindy teacher and an Assistant Director within a child care setting. I helped her part time over school holidays, and I fell in love with the job.

What’s the best thing about your job?

The best thing about my job is helping children grasp confidence within areas that they may find difficult. The lightbulb moments and fist bumps in the air are amazing to see.

What kind of clothing do you like to wear in the classroom?

I wear a variety of clothing items to school. I can be seen wearing skirts, jeans, or shorts with shirts within the working week. I tend to spend a lot of my school time on the floor working with students and hands on equipment, so I need clothing items that allow me to do that quickly and easily.

What do you like about romaroomscolosseum clothing, and what makes the styles good for the classroom?

romaroomscolosseum clothing is light and airy - which is fantastic for wearing in a classroom during the summer months. The dresses are long which would be great for when I need to get down on the floor to work with children. The colour combinations are bright and fun, which adds to the enjoyment of school and wearing them.

Bonnie has chosen to layer for her first BOOM outfit, and she has worn our Zion Tee in its soft, textured, woven fabric, under the gorgeous summery Ahana Dress in Sunset. We are in love with this dress and it’s soft flowing fabric, which drapes beautifully therefore flattering for most body types. Plus with the intricate embroidery on the bodice and hem, the Ahana dress is a truly special piece for your summer wardrobe.

For her second classroom choice, Bonnie wears our lovely soft lightweight Eva Tee in Purple, in our tencel/linen blend fabric, with the Kelsey Pants in Neela. The Kelsey Pants are the perfect summer pants with their high waisted fit that’s loose at the top tapering down to a slimmer fit ankle, making them a flattering design. The fabric is our soft floral block printed ‘Neela’ cotton with the shimmering lurex thread woven through. Bonnie has added the Ahana Embroided Kimono over top, with its sweet embroidered detail and textured woven cotton fabric. Thi is definitely a great easy combo when teaching!

And finally, we have a quick chat with Meg Thomas….

Could you please tell the BOOM community little about yourself?

Hi!! I’m Meg, a coffee enthusiast and lover of the outdoors. I grew up in Brisbane and moved to the Sunshine Coast 7 years ago. After a year on the coast, I moved to the very tip of QLD and spent three years living in Bamaga and teaching in Injinoo. I returned to the Sunshine Coast 3 years ago with two beautiful dogs in tow, Toby and Marshall.

What made you want to become a teacher?

I really enjoy being a part of a community and helping others, and teaching seemed to be a perfect fit. I’m very passionate about creating positive relationships with kids and guiding their inquisitive, eager minds.

What’s the best thing about your job?

I love being there for the ‘lightbulb’ moments and seeing the look on their face when they achieve their goals. I feel very lucky that I get to laugh, play, explore and grow with incredible little humans every day.

What kind of clothing do you like to wear in the classroom?

I’m an early years teacher, so I am constantly on the go! I love to feel comfortable in the clothes I wear as I do a lot of teaching on the ground. I’m also prone to spilling things, so bold patterns/styles are my go to.

What do you like about romaroomscolosseum clothing, and what makes the styles good for the classroom?

I absolutely love how you can effortlessly mix and match different romaroomscolosseum patterns and pull off a fun outfit! The clothes are all super light, comfortable and could easily be dressed up or down to suit your occasion.

These styles are super comfy, easy to move in and lots of fun!

Meg’s first classroom outfit is a nice simple choice with the lovely, soft, lightweight, tencel/linen blend Eva Tee in Purple, with our classic style, full length Lodhi Pants in our cotton Lodhi Garden block print fabric. Being lightweight, comfy and with pockets, this outfit is a great choice for a full day of teaching and hanging in the playground.

For her second BOOM outfit, Meg wears our gorgeous soft rayon Maahee Dress in the vibrant and tropical Kerala palm block print. This summer dress is lovely and lightweight with a fully lined skirt that flows beautifully, and finished with fun orange tassels and balloon sleeves. Meg wears it with some casual sneakers and one of our reversible bucket hats, which are a new edition to Boom summers.

“This is one of my favourite dishes and it originates from Calcutta in West Bengal.”

India’s seafood repertoire is less well known to the vegetable and meat dishes that are so well known. Many Indians, such as those of West Bengal, Orissa and Tamil Nadu, who live along the waterways of the east coast, prefer freshwater fish to saltwater varieties, even though India is surrounded by sea on two sides. The fish are caught in local rivers and streams and used exclusively in local specialties. The people of the Konkan region and Kerala on the west coast, traditionally fish in the bays.

I make this dish with either fresh green prawns, a white flesh fish, or sometimes even chicken. The sauce is delicious and creamy with a little bit of spice, and I usually serve it as a main with rice and one of the many fresh Indian breads… or sometimes I even skip the rice and just have double servings of the prawns.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!!

Please note: Ajanta is wearing our Vintej Dress in Vintej. Stay tuned, this style is coming soon!

“Friendship is knowing you are understood and seen.
Friendship is love, laughter and everything in between.”

There’s something very special about old friendships. Those memories created and shared, the individual growth you go through but always knowing each other are near, and the time spent a part only to rekindle and take off exactly where you left, like there wasn’t a day in between.

That’s what it has been like for Dui and Ajanta, which thanks to the last year and changes we’ve all had to make in our lives, brought Ajanta back to the coast and their friendship to reunite, stronger the ever.

Dui met Ajanta in 1998 at Eumundi Markets, when she had returned from India for a few months back in Australia to make some money and head back again. The universe had decided to put there stalls at Eumundi Markets next to each other, at the time Dui was selling Saris and clothing she had designed out of them, and Ajanta was selling silver jewelry from India and pieces she also made with semi-precious stones. Both being the vibrant happy souls they are, it was friendship at first sight.

A year later, sometime in 1999, Ajanta was travelling around India and had just returned to Delhi after a few weeks exploring the Himachal Pradesh area, and the village of Manali. It was then, by chance, as she was walking down a street in the Paharganj district of Delhi, she spotted a familiar face. Even though she knew Dui was always in India, the girls had not planned to meet up or even knew either would be in Delhi at that time. Thanks universe! So, from there, they embarked on a Rajasthan adventure together for a couple weeks before parting ways and Ajanta heading south.

We thought it would be fun to sit down with them 22 years later and look at a few photos taken from that trip… back when there were no digital cameras so what you snapped, is what you got.

“This photo must have been taken either the day we ran into each other, or the following one, in a street in the Paharganj.

I remember this Baba was so sweet and cheeky that we both fell in love with him instantly and he gifted us a bunch each of yellow Indian plums. There are many different kinds of Babas, or Holy Men, in India who have devoted their lives to spirituality, and chosen to live an ascetic life. Most have given up affiliation with their caste and kin and have undergone a funeral ceremony for themselves, followed by a ritual rebirth into their new ascetic life. They come from all walks of life, and they wear ocher robes, or perhaps no clothing at all, to daub their skin with holy ash, to pray and meditate, and to wander from place to place, depending on the charity of others. Seeing them all around India is another thing that makes this place so unique.”

“This photo was taken the morning after we arrived in Pushkar and were having breakfast with a fellow backpacker at our accommodation. Ajanta had never been to Pushkar before, so I was very excited to take her to the place I call my home and that’s so dear to my heart. Being on a rooftop is such great place to get an overall idea of the layout of a place, plus with that beautiful morning sun, and the heat not quite kicking in yet, it’s the best way to start the day. We had such a fun time in Pushkar together. Ajanta was doing a silversmithing course whilst I was saving a cow. It’s a long story!”

“This photo was taken on the steps outside the Albert Hall Museum in Jaipur, Rajasthan, where we stayed for a few days while on our way to Pushkar. In this photo Ajanta and I are surrounded by families of villagers who have come in for the day, dressed in their beautifully bright coloured saris and vibrant orange turbans. This is a part of India that makes my soul sing. Colour!!!”

“I think I may have pushed the driver out of his seat for this photo, and maybe even asked to drive the rickshaw. I’m not exactly sure where this photo was taken but it was either in Delhi or Jaipur (I’m thinking Delhi). Rickshaws were first invented in France in the late 17th century and started appearing in India in the late 19th century. Rickshaws are now everywhere in India and range from pulled (where the cart is pulled by a human runner) to cycle and auto rickshaws, which now there’s even the introduction of electric rickshaws. They’re lots of fun to get around in, and with population being so high, the smaller the vehicle the better! ”

“After leaving Dui in Pushkar I slowly ventured south towards Mumbai, and of course, I had to make a stop at the Ajanta Caves in the Aurangabad district. This is where my dad got my name from back when he was travelling India in early-mid 1970s, and it’s always been on my list of somewhere I MUST visit. My vision of how these ‘caves’ would look to what I actually got to experience, was unbelievable. The Ajanta Caves are a approximately 30 rock cut Buddhist monuments dating from 2nd century BC, and feature incredible sculptures, paintings, shrines and even sleeping quarters for the monks. The Ajanta Caves are universally regarded as masterpieces of Buddhist religious art and have been listed on UNESCO since the 1980s. I must admit, I felt pretty special when I was there, being in the presence of such grand and raw beauty, knowing this is where my name came from. Thanks dad!”

When Australia opens up for travel again, I wonder where the girls might meet up next?

“Friendship is your home away from home, your warm cup of sweet coffee, friendship is that twilight glow at sunrise and sunset making everything seem exciting and possible.”

If you’ve ever been lucky enough to experience an Indian Wedding you’ll know just how special and extravagant they are.

A traditional Indian wedding will last for an average of three days, incorporating different ceremonies and lots of celebrations.

Dui has been lucky to attend many Indian weddings over the years, and her son Charlie was even chosen to ride with the groom in the Baraat procession at one of them. Like everything in India that’s special to Dui, she wanted to give you a little insight as to how the multi-day Indian wedding celebrations typically roll.

Day One...

The Ganesh Puja is the first ceremony performed at a Hindu wedding and is usually held the day before the wedding to bless the proceedings. The Puja (prayer) invokes Lord Ganesh, the Hindu elephant god who is believed to be the destroyer of all obstacles and evils and is performed for good luck for both the couple and their families. All auspicious ceremonies in the Hindu religion commence with a prayer to Lord Ganesh, and for the newlyweds, it prepares them for new beginnings.

Day Two...

The Pithi ceremony is a ritual that brings good luck and is usually performed separately in the bride and grooms own homes. Pithi is a thick yellow paste made up of Tumeric, rose water and chickpea flour paste that is applied to the bride and groom's skin, which brightens the skin tone and brings
blessings upon the couple.

The day before the wedding the Mehndi ceremony occurs, when the bride and her female family members gather to have intricate henna patterns drawn on their hands and feet. The henna designs symbolise joy, beauty, spiritual awakening and offering. It’s believed the deeper the colour, the stronger the bond between bride and groom, and the deeper the henna, the better the relationship will be with your mother in law (and we know how important that is!). For this reason, Indian brides will let their henna dry for up to eight hours to ensure a rich, deep dark colour.

That evening the families will throw a Sangeet, which is an informal celebration where the bride and grooms families, and usually all the wedding guests, are invited along to attend. The Sangeet involves the introduction of the bride and grooms families, mingling, a meal, dancing and other performances.

Day Three...

The Baraat is a procession where the groom is led to the wedding venue typically on a white horse, known as a Ghodi, but sometimes the groom may choose an elephant rather than a Ghodi. Family members adorn the Ghodi with embellishments to match the groom. Surrounded by friends and family dancing and singing, the groom meets his bride's family at the entrance of the wedding venue. Meanwhile, the bride may be found secretly watching the procession from afar.

Once the groom has arrived, he is greeted by the bride's mother and the families embrace and greet each other with floral garlands, before the groom is escorted to the Mandap (altar) to await his bride. The Mandap is similar looking to a Jewish Chuppah and consists of four pillars and a canopy. The four pillars represent the four parents, and at the centre of the Mandap burns a sacred fire called the Agni.

Once the bride is escorted to the mandap, she exchanges floral neck garlands with her groom which symbolise their acceptance of the union. This is known as Jai Mala.

After the bride and groom have exchanged garlands, the Lighting of the Agni occurs. This is when the priest lights the sacred fire, or Agni, which symbolises the witness of the divine.

Once the bride's parents have given her away, which is known as the Kanya Daan ceremony, the bride and groom join hands and circle around the Agni four to seven times, keeping in mind the four pillars to a happy life. These pillars represent duty to each other, family and God, prosperity, energy and passion, and salvation. This is called Mangal Phera.

The couple then takes seven sacred steps together, the Saptapadi, with each step representing a sacred vow, symbolising a happy, faithful and prosperous life.

The groom then applies a red powder to the centre of the brides forehead and ties a black and gold beaded necklace around her neck, this symbolising her new status as a married woman and his vow to always protect her.

Finally, the priest offers his blessings and the party celebration can begin!

And we all know what a wedding reception is like…. FUN FUN FUN!

Let’s hope one day we get to experience the joy, colour and atmosphere of an Indian wedding.

The best part is that you don’t have to travel to in India to experience a vibrant Indian wedding.

Shivam Wedding Decorators is based in Brisbane and specialises in Indian weddings, offering a distinctive range of stunning decor for weddings and events. We spoke with the owner Rajee to get a little insight into the big, beautiful weddings happening in Brisbane and around Australia, and got some amazing images from weddings they have organised.

Tell us about your Indian wedding business in Brisbane?

I was the pioneer of this business in Norway and started around 20 years ago. I started with fresh flower wedding garlands then I was asked to provide a traditional Mandap (a decorative arbour) where the wedding ritual takes place. So, I discussed it with my husband and we decided to try and provide this very important part of the traditional wedding, the Mandap, plus the decorations to make all the brides and grooms feel at home.

An Indian wedding goes for multiple days, even in Australia. I always tell couples to start their preparations as early as possible! We usually provide as many services as we can to make things easy for the bride and groom.

We actually cater for both Indian and Western weddings. We also do Indo Western weddings where we have bit of both styles and mix them together.

A fun fact about us is that we have also worked with both Bollywood and Hollywood productions! There are a few Bollywood ones that get filmed here, on the East Coast, and some are also filmed in other parts of Australia.

Is there a wedding that stands out the most you can tell us about?

We did the most outstanding wedding setup in a full traditional royal theme in the main ball room of Eaton’s Hill Hotel in Brisbane. Just look at how beautiful it was! We provided lots of traditional elements and colour.

And just a few personal questions….
What do you love most about Indian culture? Be it dance, the arts, cooking or something else.

Indian culture is very tolerant, accepting, full of love, life and colours. I love Indian dance and cooking.

If the world could adopt one aspect of Indian culture, what would it be and why?

The tolerance of all cultures, accepting them and celebrating.

What does it meant to you to live a big, beautiful life?

You are lucky to have big beautiful life, so love your life and celebrate it.

Chickpeas, packed with rich flavour, protein and nutrients, are an essential item in the Indian kitchen.

They can serve as a meat substitute for vegetarians (which majority of Indians are) or just stand their own ground as delicious little tasty peas. They were first introduced into India by Afghan Traders and were called ‘Kabuli Chana’, after Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, and ‘chana’ meaning peas.

This recipe is a simple tasty dish that can either be enjoyed as a main with fried bread, ‘poori’ or ‘paratha’, or served as a side alongside curries, rice and accompaniments, for when you’re serving up an Indian banquet to share with friends.

If you enjoy your food a little spicier, fold in 2-4 minced green chillies, which I suggest you wait till after you’ve prepared the dish to add, so you can check the seasonings first. Otherwise, I love having raita with everything Indian (and not Indian) which is a tasty and cooling side dish consisting of yoghurt and cucumber as the main ingredients. There’s many different variations of Raita but I personally just like adding mint and coriander.

It’s Chai Time! That beautiful aromatic sweet drink that is integral to the rhythm of life in India.

That time in the day when you stop, take a moment, and either be with yourself, gossip with the neighbours, or have discussions about life and politics, with friends, new and old. Everything happens over a chai in India.

“Chai” is the Hindi word for “tea”, and it was derived from “cha”, which is the Chinese word for “tea”, although in Hindi the term chai means a mix of spices steeped into a tea-like beverage. Chai recipes vary across the continent of India, but the traditional ingredients of the spiced tea blend is usually black tea leaves mixed with spices, like cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger and black peppercorns. It is brewed strong with milk, and always sweetened with sugar or honey.

The origin of chai dates back more than 5,000 years ago, when the ruling king of the time, ordered a recipe be created for a healing spiced beverage, for use in Ayurveda, a traditional medicinal practice in which herbs and spices are used for healing. The heat from ginger and black pepper was believed to stimulate digestion; the antiseptic properties in cloves were thought to help relieve pain; cardamom was used as a mood elevator; cinnamon supported circulation and respiratory function; and star anise was known to freshen the breath.

As the healing beverage spread across India, a wide variety of spices were used to prepare the drink, depending on the region of the continent, or even the neighbourhood, where the beverage was being made.

Believe it or not, original versions of Chai contained no actual tea leaves. Milk and sugar were also later additions to the famous drink.

The addition of black tea leaves, milk and sugar were popularized thousands of years later (in the mid-1800s) when the Camellia sinensis assamica tea plant variety was discovered in India and cultivated by the British, but it wasn’t until the 1930s that tea leaves were more commonly used in Chai though, as earlier prices were too high for people to afford.

Today Chai tea stalls are a common sight throughout India, and all with their own Chai recipe. But perhaps the strongest association with Indian Chai is the familiar chant of Chai Wallahs. “ garam chai garam chai” (hot tea) as they weave their way along trains bursting to the seams and equally crowded streets.

Now, let’s get down to business and make some Chai….

 • Loose Black Tea leaves
 • 2 to 3 Green Cardamom pods
 • 2 to 3 Cloves
 • 1 to 2 Star Anise
 • 1x Cinnamon Stick
 • 1x Thumb of Fresh Ginger
 • 3 to 5 Tbsp Coconut Sugar
 • 4 Cups of Milk or milk alternative

Method:

Fill the bottom of a saucepan (size will depend on how many you have coming over for chai) with water, so let’s say about 1cm high from the bottom. Place it on the stove on a high heat to bring to a boil.

Add a pinch of tea leaves per person (make it a good size pinch!) and let the water and leaves boil.

Meanwhile, place a few cardamon pods, cloves and some aniseed in a mortar and pestle, give them a bash, and add them to the boiling tea along with a cinnamon quill (Dui has used half a stick for 4 people so it’s not to strong)

Continue to boil the tea…

Next up, get a good chunk of ginger, the size your tastebuds choose, and give it a bash in the mortar and pestle leaving the skin on. Unless you want to peel it, but Dui isn’t too fussy with that. It’s all flavor! Now add the ginger to your pot of boiling deliciousness.

Now it’s time to sweeten things up! Dui is using coconut sugar in her chai, but otherwise normal sugar or honey can be used too. In India, they love things sweet, so it’s usually one spoon per person, plus one for the pot!

Next is the milk, or a milk alternative. Back in India they would get the milk fresh from their cows, as it’s common for most households to have a cow in India. Here, we have so many choices of milk and alternatives, it’s sometimes hard to keep up. Today Dui has chosen oat milk and she just guesses the amount to pour in, but I’d say one cup per person if you’re the measurement type.

The chai should now be boiling nicely, your home should be smelling wonderfully, and your chai will nearly be ready to share, just one last step. Typically in India they will allow the chai to boil, rise up, and then they’ll take it off the heat to allow it to come back down. Then repeat that process 3 times. Some may say the milk is burning when that happens, but don’t listen to them, it’s just the chai way!!

Your chai will now be ready and perfect for drinking… romaroomscolosseum!

Have you noticed the imagery of our new summer pieces, and the beautiful locations in Jaipur, Dui’s beloved second home?

It was such a thrill to work with Indian photographer, Amit Sihag, for this collection, and to be able to feel all those senses through his photos, of the place that was Dui’s inspiration behind this collection.

I caught up with Amit to find out what inspires him…

My passion is people, both abstract and documentary, which today play out in my fashion photography.
- Amit Sihag

Firstly, could you please tell the Boom Community a little about yourself?

Hello my name is Amit. I was born into an agricultural family, in a Punjab village. I first started studying as an engineer but then went on to study photography, at the SIR J.J School of Applied Art in Mumbai. For a few years I worked in Mumbai as a photographer, before I came to Jaipur. Ten years have passed since I finished my studies, and it’s been like a ‘blink of an eye’ that I’ve been living my dream career since.

What inspired you to get into photography?

I loved taking pictures from my childhood. I was gifted my first camera at the age of ten, when I started off by clicking pictures of cows and buffaloes at the farm.

I was very bright academically, so with it came the pressure of being an engineer. I was met with a life threatening accident and was in hospital for 4 months. This made me think about life being so fragile and how important it is to follow your dreams. So after I finished my engineering (as my parents desired), I moved on to follow my dream.

Are there any famous Indian photographers that inspire you?

I get inspired by all different art forms and a lot of photographers doing good work. Raghu Rai, Dayanita Singh, Prabhuda das Gupta are some of the Indian photographers that inspire me though.

Is there a style of photography you prefer? Be it fashion, landscape, abstract, people etc.

My passion is people, both abstract and documentary, which today play out in my fashion photography.

You live in Jaipur, Rajasthan, how would you describe it to someone who has never been there?

Jaipur is a very rich mix of colours, heritage, architecture and amazing hospitality. There is art in every street, which warms your soul.

India is very rich in culture and the arts; dance, craftsmanship, cooking, music and of course, Bollywood. Is there anything you love most about Indian culture?

There is a saying here in India " 4 kose par badle paani, 4 kose par bani" it means, the water in India changes its taste after every 4 kms and so does the language. This diversity is my favourite thing.

Are there any famous creatives from India you think the world should know more about?

The folk songs that are not written and are sung generations after generations and they are the dying art due to over modernisation.

What’s your favourite Bollywood film?

Lakshay

Do you have a favourite Indian (food) dish you think we should all try?

Kheer ( Rice Pudding )

What’s your favourite Indian band (music)?

Kabir Cafe

If the world could adopt one aspect of Indian culture, what would it be and why?

Acceptance and co existence of different cultures.

What does it meant to you to live a big, beautiful life?

For me it’s good work, family, travel, evening with friends, more kind hearts and peace in the world.

Namaste.

Our Summer 22 collection is here!

Read about Dui's inspiration behind our fun and colourful designs.

India is a magical place where anything is possible. It's where Dui is most at home, and where she has lived on and off for the past 27 years. Our vibrant summer collection is inspired by India.

India captivates your mind, body, heart and soul and in this collection we celebrate all the colour, joy and wisdom that is India. Welcome to our Summer Collection. Namaste.

We are so excited to be launching our summer collection very, very soon. Before the full collection arrives, we wanted to bring you a taste of what is to come, as well as insight into what has inspired our designs.

In this collection, you can expect to see playful new styles, traditional block prints, hand embroidered details, stonewashed cotton and, of course, lots of colour! Wooden block printing is such a big part of romaroomscolosseum, as we have long worked with our Indian artisans in Rajasthan to bring our clothes to life.

When designing the collection, Dui was living at her home in Pushkar, and inspired by the vibrancy of the streets and rich history of her surroundings.

The new collection is a lot of fun. I was inspired to create it during the last time I was in India, which is now quite a while ago. This is the longest time in 27 years that I haven’t been living in our home in India, as I’ve been back in Australia for a year and a half. This collection started way back then, in lockdown, in India.

It’s been wonderful photographing this collection and you’ll see why when you start to see our campaign imagery as it comes out. We’ve collaborated with some incredible artists in India - amazing photographers and brilliant stylists. It’s been a new and very interesting experience organising it all from afar, but we have absolutely loved what everyone has put together. We can’t wait to see it all unfold. We’re very grateful for all of our partnerships in India."

- Dui

Wooden Block Printing is key to the romaroomscolosseum label, and is a traditional form of fabric design and known to be one of the earliest methods used to transfer prints onto fabrics.

“It is a slow method due to the ‘by hand’ process. A simple yet effective method which is capable of achieving a beautiful, artistic effect, formed by tiny blocks of wood that are hand carved by craftsman. These results are unobtainable by any other modern method, and it is amazing to experience and watch this unfold,” Dui says.

By showcasing Indian textiles, shooting on location in Jaipur and working with Indian photographers, models and stylists we hope to embody the inspiration behind our collection and stay true to what it is all about - incredible India.

Our summer collection will be released in early September 2021, with fresh new styles arriving every few weeks. You can shop the collection online or in our Hastings Street store in Noosa Heads.

India is calling.

Vibrant rainbow buildings line the streets greeting those who wander them with flashes of turquoise, pink, red and yellow spices waft on the breeze, bringing with them the promise of simmering chai, new friends and deep conversations of life and love. The streets vibrate with life as scooters zoom, rickshaws rattle, cows meander, and store holders sweep their stoops, colouring the pavement with bright Rangaavali designs to express their joy and welcome all who would journey there.

The vitality of the street is met with luscious embroideries in popping orange, purple and pure white, jewel toned floral block prints, and playful geometric lines.

As the collection unfolds, discover printed Hindi giving romaroomscolosseum to all, and vintage florals that collide with acid-bright stripes, tropical palm trees, and a dreamy spray of romantic blooms.
